Loveless is a Russian drama film directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev. (The Return / Leviathan)
This beautifully sculpted film tells the sad tale of a lost boy.

When 11-year-old Alexey goes missing, unnoticed for two days, the estranged parents come together to find him and here commences our journey into the dark corners of the human psyche. Loveless.

The cinematography is effortlessly and subtly masterful, giving us some respite from the achingly desperate story with pallid urban & haunting bucolic landscapes beautifully framed at every turn. Where seemingly inconsequential visual detail early on in the film, later becomes heavily meaningful and poetic.

Zvyagintsev skillfully paces this crippling ordeal of a film, captivating his audience with a compelling unfolding of the drama. Again, Zavaginsev displays a true talent in screenwriting. Especially with his characterisations, never giving us the characters 'on a plate' but instead he reveals their personalities and their flaws bit by bit, through conversations with work colleagues and hairdressers and lovers, so slowly we get to piece these damaged people's lives together over the span of the film itself. Just wonderful.

Loveless opened to critical acclaim and it won the Jury Prize at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.
